VTS - SAIM
What the heck are all of those initials? VTS stands for Veterinary Technician Specialist and SAIM stands for Small Animal Internal Medicine.
How do we get those initials?
It's an involved process that takes about 1.5 years to complete, but it's totally worth it. The Academy of Internal Medicine for Veterinary Technicians governs all VTS SAIM's both in the United States and internationally. If you are interested in getting your certification visit their website for all the nitty gritty details on how to apply.
Here are the basics:
First you have to be a licensed veterinary technician or nurse (depending on where in the world you get licensed) for a minimum of 3 years.
Next you must spend >70% of your time in the area you are specializing in.
Then the big piece of the puzzle: the application to the academy you are specializing in. The application takes a full year to complete and it includes: case log of a minimum of 50 cases, 4 case reports, letters of recommendation, continuing education credits, and a verified skills assessment.
You submit your application and once it is approved you then sit for an exam that is held once a year. When you pass, you can officially put those coveted initials after your name.
